A study by the US Department of Labor reported that 50% of firms with more than 1,000 employees have had an incident of workplace violence. In another study the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that more than 1.7 million employees are victims of workplace assaults annually.
One of the occupations heavily impacted by workplace violence is the healthcare industry, particularly America's hospitals, clinics and other health care facilities according to an alert issued in June 2010 by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, an independent health care oversight group. The report indicated that since 2004, there have been "significant increases in reports of assault, rape and homicide, with the greatest number of reports in the last three years."
In addition, Security Magazine reported that workplace violence was identified as one of the top five concerns of top security managers in their December edition.
