According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1,719 male and female workers committed suicide while on the job between 2003 and 2007, a statistic that has been on the rise. This may be an indication of increasing pressure and stress levels among employees. When there is no harmony between work and social life, employees tend to suffer mental illnesses. Employers can take action to help support those with mental illness by educating managers on detecting the symptoms of a possible suicide crisis. Start by creating a friendly workplace; training and nurturing fully-engaged employees; establishing programs that reward mental wellness; and using social marketing to change the conversation. Use consideration when terminating an employee with a known mental illness and take suicide threats seriously.
