Despite the fact that depression affects more American adults than diabetes, people are often reluctant to discuss mental illness. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reported that in 2014, about 44 million adults – or 18.1% of U.S. adults -- suffered from mental illness. By promoting mental wellness in the workplace, employers could save the 200 million workdays the Center for Disease Control reported are lost each year due to depression. This totals $17 to $44
billion annually. Those with untreated mental illness are likely to have difficulty functioning at their jobs. Based on the statistics, it is likely that at least one employee is struggling with depression or anxiety.
