Mental health campaign group Time to Change has reported that the leading cause of sickness absence in the United Kingdom is mental health and it’s causing businesses around £1,000 per employee per year. More than 95% of those calling in sick with stress give a different reason for their absence. It is crucial for HR teams to make the issue of mental health a top priority by creating a thoughtful communication strategy. Communisis, a company with more than 2,100 employees across 17 countries, is donating 500 working hours a year to raising awareness of mental health issues. The company’s internal programme is aimed at improving the understanding of mental health and to help employees who might be suffering to seek help.
