Student Kills Principal, Self in Pa. School Shooting 4/25/2003
A 14-year-old student opened fire in the cafeteria of the Red Lion Area Junior High School in Red Lion, Pa., killing the school principal before turning the gun on himself.
York County Coroner Barry Bloss said the gunman was identified as eighth-grader James Sheets. He died at the scene of a single gunshot to the head. The principal, Eugene Segro, 51, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
According to Patrick McFadden, the executive director of York County's Department of Emergency Services, the shooting happened 15 minutes before the start of classes. "Everyone ran out of the cafeteria yelling, 'He has a gun!'" said eighth-grader Danny Dulin.
The school is not equipped with metal detectors, but has security cameras.
According to police, Sheets had two guns, a .357 Magnum revolver and a .22-caliber pistol, both reportedly belonging to his uncle. Police said Sheets used a key to get the guns out of a locked safe.
School Superintendent Larry Macaluso said Sheets had no history of disciplinary problems and had no known disputes with Segro
In 2001, the same school district was the site of a machete attack on a kindergarten class that injured a principal, two teachers, and 11 of the 23 pupils in the class.
