in Canadian Schools
11/27/00
Two
separate incidents of school violence in Canadian schools have rekindled
concern
over youth violence, Reuters reported Nov. 20.
At a
high school in Calgary, Alberta, Samer Jaber, 17, was killed after
Being stabbed
repeatedly in the neck in a crowded hallway of Lester B. Pearson
High School.
Police are currently investigating the incident, but believe the
stabbing
was a result of a small debt owed to a fellow student.
In the
neighboring province of Saskatchewan, a 14-year-old girl was stabbed
in the
shoulder in a dispute with a classmate. Her injuries are not
life-threatening.
The two
incidents stirred a debate among Canadians over causes of student
violence
and potential cures.
